Planning an Alaska cruise with kids in August? You’re in for an unforgettable adventure: crisp glacier air, breaching whales, peaceful forests, and golden-hour sunsets that last forever. But packing? That can feel a little… overwhelming.
We get it. This isn’t your average warm-weather cruise. Alaska weather is layered, moody, and a little wild — and that’s exactly what makes it magical. In this guide, we’re sharing the exact Alaska cruise packing list we use for our own family of travelers, based on real-life experience and dozens of port days in the Land of the Midnight Sun.
This list is tailored specifically for families cruising Alaska in August (arguably one of the best months to go!) and includes:
- Alaska-specific clothing recommendations for kids and adults
- Smart gear for port excursions
- What to bring for comfort and connection on the ship
- Tried-and-true favorites from our experience as a travel-loving family

Why You Need a Thoughtful Alaska Cruise Packing List
Table of Contents
Unlike Caribbean cruises, where you can throw swimsuits and flip-flops in a bag and go, an Alaskan cruise needs some strategy. Weather in August can range from sunny and 75°F to foggy and freezing. You’ll walk through misty rainforests, take boats through glacier fjords, and explore historic gold rush towns — all in one week.
You need to pack for:
- Layered temperatures (mornings and glacier days are COLD)
- Occasional rain and damp conditions
- Outdoor excursions (hikes, boats, wildlife tours)
- Relaxed onboard moments (hot tubs, sea days, family dinners)
